Sr. Lucille Duchesneau, DHS, (age), a member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, died on
Sunday, September 9, at the Holy Spirit Health Care Center where she has been in residence since 1988.
Sr. Lucille was born Ella Eglantine Duchesneau on July 21, 1917 in Sherbrooke, P.Q. Canada, the daughter of the late Adelard and Aurore (Fournier) Duchesneau. In 1932 she entered religious life and made her religious profession on September 3, 1936 at the Motherhouse in St. Brieuc, France. She was then known as Sr. Lucille des Anges.
A graduate of Diocesan Sisters’ College, Putnam, CT, with a B.A., Sr. Lucille earned a Master of Arts from Fairfield University. Early in her religious life she was an educator. Her various teaching assignments included Assumption School, Chicopee, MA; St. Anne School, Swanton, VT; and Holy Family School, Fairfield, CT.
In 1960, she was named Diocesan Supervisor of Schools for the Archdiocese of Hartford and in 1963 she became a General Councilor at the Motherhouse in St. Brieuc, France. At the end of her term in 1968, Sr. Lucille served in our South American missions at Santiago & Antofagasta, Chile until 1981. At that time she returned to the United States and remained at the Provincial House until 1983 at which time she went to Leominster, MA serving as receptionist at St. Cecilia’s until her retirement in 1988 at the Provincial House in Putnam.
Survivors include two sisters, Ida Grautski and Lucille Comeau as well as one brother, Raymond Duchesneau all of Leominster, MA and several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Calling hours at the Provincial House chapel will be on Tuesday, September 11, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:15 PM. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 12 at the Holy Spirit Provincial House chapel followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Putnam, CT.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Daughters of the Holy Spirit Retirement Fund, 72 Church St., Putnam, CT 06260. Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam, CT, is in charge of arrangements.
