1912 – 2007

Sr. Jeanne Morneau, DHS, 94, a member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit died on Wednesday, February 7th  at Holy Spirit Health Care Center where she has been in residence since 1997.

Born Marie Cécile Jeanne Morneau on August 26, 1912 in Fitchburg, MA, the daughter of the late Auguste and Diana (Fournier) Morneau, Sr. Jeanne entered religious life in 1928 and made her religious profession on August 25, 1931 at the Motherhouse in St. Brieuc, France.  She was then known as Sr. Noël.

Her first assignment was at St. Anne, Quimper, in France in 1931 where she served as music teacher.   She returned to the United States in 1935 and taught at St. Cecilia, Leominster, MA after which she was assigned as mistress of boarders at Putnam Catholic Academy in 1941.  In 1942 she taught music and was sacristan at Sacred Heart, Wauregan, CT and in 1947 she served  as musician at St. Sylvester, Graniteville, VT until 1955 when she was assigned  to teach music at St. Mary, Jewett City, CT. In 1964, Sr. Jeanne was named Superior/Administrator of St. Joseph Guest House in New Haven, CT and served in the same capacity at St. Elizabeth Guest House in Hartford, CT from 1972-75.  In 1975 she served as Administrator at St. Joseph Villa, Putnam, CT. until 1988 at which time she became bookkeeper at Holy Spirit Provincial House until her retirement there in 1997.

Survivors include one sister,  Sr. Thérèse Morneau, DHS of Putnam, CT and several nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Calling hours at the Provincial House chapel will be on Friday, February 9th                                    from 2:00 to 4:00 and 7:00 to 9:00 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:15 PM.  A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 10th at 11 AM at  Holy Spirit Provincial House chapel followed by burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Putnam, CT

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Daughters of the Holy Spirit Retirement Fund, 72 Church St., Putnam, CT, 06260.

Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam, CT is in charge of arrangements.
