January 21, 1919 – January 25, 2008

Sr. Helen Pyzocha, DHS, 89, a member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, died on Friday, January 25 at the Holy Spirit Health Care Center where she had been in residence since 2006. Sr. Helen was  born on January 21, 1919 in Jewett City, CT, the daughter of the late Edward and Catherine (Zwolinski) Pyzocha.  She entered religious life in 1936 and made her religious profession on August 23, 1939 at the Motherhouse in St. Brieuc, France.  She was then known as Sr. Catherine of Mary.

 She earned her B.A. at Diocesan Sisters’ College, Woodstock, CT and was an elementary school teacher for most of her religious life.  Her first teaching assignment was at Abergavenny in Wales.  She returned to the United States in 1946 and her assignments here included Mt Carmel, St. Joseph and St Anne’s Schools—all in Waterbury, CT.  She also taught at HolyGhostAcademy, Tupper Lake, NY; St. Louis, New Haven; St. Mary, JewettCity; St. Thomas, West Warren, MA and St. Anne, Hartford, CT.  Following the close of St. Anne, Hartford in 1987 she went to work as a clerk in Administrative Services at the StateOfficeBuilding in Hartford.  She retired in 1993 and moved to Putnam, CT where she served as Head of Printing Services at the Holy Spirit Provincial House there until 2005.

Survivors include one sister, Elizabeth Dyl of Pawtucket, RI and several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grandnephews.

 Calling hours at the Holy Spirit Provincial House chapel will be on Monday, January 28, from 2-4 and 7-9 PM with a Prayer Service at 7:15 PM.  A Mass of Christian burial will take place on  Tuesday, January 29,  at  11 AM in the Provincial House chapel,  followed by burial at St.MaryCemetery, Putnam, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Daughters of the Holy Spirit Retirement Fund, 72 Church St., Putnam, CT06260.  Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam, CT is in charge of arrangements.
