Putnam – Sebastian S. Cerreto, 95, of Perry St, died peacefully with his family at his side, on Monday, May 11, 2015 at Westview Health Care Center. He was the loving husband of Viola (Bonneville) Cerreto. Born in New London, he was the son of the late Michael and Mariannina (Connata) Cerreto.
Mr. Cerreto was a proud veteran of World War II serving with the United States Navy. He was also very proud of his alma mater, Purdue University, where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1944. On September 13, 1947 in St. Mary Church of the Visitation in Putnam, he was united in marriage to the former Viola Bonneville. Mr. Cerreto worked at Belding-Heminway Company for over forty years as a mechanical engineer and plant manager. He made many contributions and innovations to improve the thread winding and dying processes.
He felt strongly about service to the community and was a member of the Putnam Lodge of Elks, the Putnam School Board for eighteen years, the Democratic Town Committee and the Redevelopment Committee for the town of Putnam. He was also a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Sebastian enjoyed reading, music, watching westerns, yard work and helping his wife take care of their home. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially the Yankees and Giants. He will always be remembered as a family man who cherished the quality time that he was able to spend with his grandchildren.
Sebastian will be greatly missed by his wife of sixty-seven years Viola Cerreto; his son Michael Cerreto and his wife Patricia of Bridgewater, MA; two daughters Dr. Mary Cerreto and her husband David Coulter, MD of Natick, MA and Barbara Porter and her husband Clyde of Dayville; three grandchildren Kenneth Cerreto and his wife Patricia of Harvard, MA, Jonathan Porter and his wife Brynn of State College, PA, and Craig Porter and his fiancé Beth Dubofsky of Killingly; two great grandchildren Sebastian and Holly Cerreto; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Joseph, Louis, Benjamin, Thomas, and James Cerreto and his sisters Mary Perry, Concetta Pongetti, Phyllis Bonnano, and Rose Cerreto.
Sebastian’s kind and gentle manner made an impact on everyone he met. His family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Joseph Botta and to the nurses and aides at Westview Health Care Center, especially Judy Holt, for their compassionate care.
