Pomfret, CT – Russell “Russ” Everett Avery passed away on Wednesday November 19, 2014 after a valiant two year battle with pancreatic cancer.  He is survived by his former wife, Patricia Avery of Charlottesville, VA; his four children and their spouses:  Stephen and Teresa Avery of Bedford, VA., Christina and John Bowman of Charlottesville, VA., Shannon and Richard Hull of Barboursville, VA., and Russell (Scooter) and Ereina Avery, of Ruckersville, VA.; his fifteen grandchildren; and his brother Douglas Avery and family of Willington, CT.

Russ was born Pomfret Center, CT to the late Clara Nutall Avery in Pomfret, CT.  He was a graduate of the University of Connecticut, School of Agriculture and dealt with cattle for many years before starting his beloved Country Springs, a well-known bottled water company in Pomfret, CT.  He was a member of the Danielson National Guard for many years.  One of his favorite pastimes was playing golf with friends at his club, Vineyard Valley, and putting together winning teams for local tournaments. Russ spent his final days in hospice care in Virginia surrounded by family and loved ones.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Russ’s family 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2014 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St. Putnam, CT., followed by a graveside service in Brooklyn South Cemetery, Canterbury Rd. Brooklyn. The family would like to extend their special thanks to Russ’ many friends in Connecticut who cared for him along the way. We also extend our sincere appreciation for the oncology team at UMASS Worcester Memorial Hospital and Hospice of the Piedmont in Charlottesville, VA. With sadness I read about Russell’s passing which was found by chance.
We attended Pomfret Community & rode the school bus from second
through fourth grades before my family returned to Putnam.
Russell was always polite, not quite as ornery as some of us,
& I always thought his mother was such a pretty lady.
My sincere condolences to his family.
