Rose

1920- 2013

Rose Viola (Hazzard) Gould passed away on Sept. 22, 2013, surrounded by her family. Born on April 25, 1920 to Maude Lillian (Brown) Hazzard and George Hazzard in Woodstock, CT.  Rose was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend and respected elder of the Nipmuc Tribe. She was one of 14 brothers and sisters and is survived by sisters, who affectionately called her “Lady” Clara (Hazzard) Henries of Killingly, Gladys (Hazzard) Kilgore of Richmond, CA, Beatrice Jackson of Putnam and a brother George Hazzard of Napa Valley, CA.    In April of 2013 she celebrated her 93rd birthday surrounded by her extended family.

In 1940, Rose married Joseph Bates Gould who predeceased her in September 16, 2000. Together they raised a family of nine children. Rose is survived by a large extended family, including her children Janet (Norman) Cote of Killingly, Donald (Louise) Gould of Putnam, James (Patricia) Gould, of Putnam,    Kenneth (Joni) Gould of Putnam, Annette (Robert) Butler of Newberry, FL. Rose Figueroa of Danielson, William Gould of Killingly.  She was predeceased by sons Raymond Gould and Joseph Gould.  In addition, Rose had 19 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren. Rose looked forward to Sunday afternoons with her daughters Janet and Rose.

Throughout her life, Rose was loved and admired by her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them.  Her two great-grandchildren Angelina Gould and Trenten Haddock Gould along with her 4-legged best friend Bella were her source of daily joy. She was lovingly cared for by her son Kenneth and, near the end of her life, friend and companion Ann Bunker, who were constantly by her side. In addition to being a woman of great faith, Rose and her extended family have been active members of the Nipmuc Nation.

Rose loved to cook for her family, was a lover of animals and enjoyed a good laugh.  She also enjoyed dancing and guacamole.

The family of Rose Viola Gould will be accepting visitors during calling hours in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church Street, Putnam, CT on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013 from 6pm to 8pm.  Graveside Services will be held in the Grove Street Cemetery on Friday, Sept 27, 2013 at 11am where she will be laid to rest next to her husband Joseph of 60 years.

We are so sorry for your loss. Losing your mother is hard, but I have to say, she had such a long and full life. You had her for more years than most people. For that you can be thankful. I pray for comfort and peace for your family and that God will show himself strong to you, as you grieve the loss of a very special lady. Her memory will forever be etched in your hearts. All the wonderful things she meant to you will be remembered in the most loving a gentle way, as she will always remain a special part of your life.
    With Our Sincere Sympathy,
    Tom & Linda Thompson
