1931 – 2008

 

Putnam – Robert Lionel Quintal, Sr. 76, of Mill St., died Sunday April 20, 2008 at home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.  He was the beloved husband of Emily (Overby) Quintal.  Married in Kenbridge, VA, they celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on January 12, 2008.  Born in Fitchburg, MA, he was the son of the late Edgar J. and Alice (Mandler) Quintal.

 

Mr. Quintal worked for the Connecticut Department of Transportation for 32 years retiring in 1986.  He was a Korean War Army Veteran serving with the Seventh Infantry Division from 1951 to 1954 when he was honorably discharged.  He received the Combat Infantryman Badge, Korean Service Medal with three bronze stars, United Nations Service Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation.  He recently received the Connecticut Service Medal.  He was a member of Albert J. Breault VFW Post 1523 and the Connecticut State Employees Association.  He enjoyed woodworking in his spare time.

 

Besides his wife, he is survived by his son, Robert L. Quintal, Jr. and his wife Christine of Woodstock; his Daughter, Claire Q. Mackowiak and her husband Richard of Eastford;

his three sisters, Theresa  Hubert and her husband Maurice of Putnam, Pauline Vadnais of Bowie, MD and Irene Torsiello and her husband Anthony of Newington, CT; and his two grandchildren, Robert Mackowiak of Eastford and Jordan Quintal of Woodstock.

 

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Robert’s family from 4:00 to 7:00 pm, Tuesday, April 22, 2008 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam.  A gathering will begin at 9:30 am on Wednesday April 23, 2008 at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am in St. Mary Church of the Visitation, 218 Providence St., Putnam.  Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Day Kimball Hospital Oncology Dept., PO Box 632, Putnam, CT 06360 or St. Mary Church Renovation Fund, 218 Providence St., Putnam, CT 06260.
