Putnam – It is with deep and profound sadness that we share the passing of Peter Marshall LeClair, age 78, on May 23, 2022. Peter was born in Putnam, CT and was a lifelong resident of the town that he loved so much.
Peter graduated from Monson Academy in Wilbraham, MA for his secondary education and then attended Nichols College and the University of Connecticut. He served his country in the US Army as a MP during the Tet Offensive of the Vietnam War. In his later years, Peter became a strong advocate for the veterans of Foreign Wars, always trying to raise awareness of their health care needs.
Peter had a larger-than-life personality that drew people to him. Once you met him, there was an immediate connection. He had a unique sense of humor that made some of the most tedious situations seem light -hearted and funny. His “joie de vivre” was infectious and he left us all with many happy memories.
After his return from Vietnam, he completed his education and developed his entrepreneurial nature. He took over the family business, LeClair’s Market, and continued to bring new ideas to the table. He and his wife Joan expanded the grocery business to include catering and prepared takeout food. After retirement, he was a referee at basketball and soccer games.
Among Peter’s most passionate hobbies was the game of golf. He was a member of Quinnatisset Country Club and one of his career highlights was having a hole-in-one on the same hole as his father! His love of golf was only surpassed by his love of thoroughbred horse racing. Peter and Joan spent every August at Saratoga Springs, NY where many good times were had with dear friends.
Peter leaves behind his best friend and loving wife, Joan; sisters, Paula Dorn, Pamela and her husband, Gilbert Girard, and Patricia and her husband, Greg Sullivan; sisters-in-law Virginia Barbee, and Nancy and her husband, Larry Chambers; brother-in-law, Thomas Dufault; as well as 12 nieces and nephews and 18 grandnieces and grandnephews.
Peter was predeceased by his father Paul M. LeClair, his mother Blanche LeClair, and his brother-in-law, Brooks Dorn.
A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Mary Church of the Visitation, 218 Providence St, Putnam, CT, on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at 11:00 am.
