Paul A. Jacobsen

1930 – 2010

Vernon, CT & Woodstock, CT – Paul A. Jacobsen, 80, of Port St. Lucie, FL, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 24, 2010. Paul was surrounded by many loved ones over the past several weeks and died peacefully at the lake. He was the loving husband of the late Elsie (Braaten) Jacobsen for 52 years. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of the late Paul Arthur and Sigrid (Evensen) Jacobsen.

Paul served in the USMC, after which he went to work for Alcan Aluminum in NYC. In 1963, he moved his family to Vernon, CT, where he lived for 26 years before retiring to Florida. He was an active member of Trinity Covenant Church of Manchester and the First Congregational Church of Port St. Lucie, where he sang in the choir. He spent his summers at the lake in Woodstock, CT.

Paul is survived by his son, Steven Jacobsen and his wife Debora of Stafford Springs, CT; his daughters, Debra Riley and her husband Michael of Ellington, CT, Joanne Graves and her husband Larry of Ellington, CT, and Linda Haggerty and her husband Brian of Ft. Pierce, FL; his brother Allan Jacobsen; his close cousin, Holly Barnes; and his eight grandchildren, Mark, Jake, and Katie Riley, Lindsay and Thomas Jacobsen, Zack Graves, and Laura and Sarah Haggerty.

The most important things to Paul were his faith, family, and friends, and this was reflected in how he lived his life. We are all blessed to have known him.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service for Paul at 3:00 pm Saturday August 28, 2010 at Trinity Covenant Church, 302 Hackmatack St., Manchester, CT.  Memorial donations may be made to Elsie’s House, c/o Safe Net Ministries, PO box 93, Stafford Springs, Ct 06076 or www.SafeNetMinistries.com.  Gilman Funeral home has been entrusted with his arrangements.  For guestbook visit www.GilmanAndValade.com.

I have known the Jacobsens since I was 4 in kindergarten. So it’s been a long time-over 45 years. Paul (Mr. Jacobsen is what I was used to calling him) was a kind, generous and thoughtful man who loved his family very much. I know he was very devoted to his church. I remember him coaching me and his son- my great friend Steve, when we were in the baseball Farm League. I think we were maybe 8 or 9 years old.
I learned some life lessons from Paul. Let’s just say he had lots of advice when me and Steve were teenagers.
I am so glad I went to visit Steve several weeks ago at the lake. I got to see Paul for the last time. We spoke briefly. And as he usually did, he made a wise-guy comment to me about how I didn’t have a tan. I just laughed.
That was the Mr. Jacobsen I knew.

So Sorry that your dad and mom are both gone I was your dad’s first girlfriend in Brooklyn, NY. Went to his HS graduation. We went to church together, and had great boy-friend, girl-friend times together. Unfortunately, my parents moved me to Ohio, so life went on. For some reason, I have had PJ on my mind this year. Now I know why.
Please accept my sympathy. Obviously he was as caring in his old age as he was as a young man
