March 1, 1948- November 6, 2020
Niels Bjørn Skjold Jensen, age 72, of Charlestown, Rhode Island, passed away at home on Friday, November 6, 2020, with members of his immediate family at his side after a long struggle with cancer. Born in Copenhagen, Denmark on March 1, 1948, the son of Gertrude and Werner Jensen, Niels emigrated to the United States in 1975 and settled in Connecticut, where he was married to Patricia A. Jensen for 30 years, and where he raised his beloved daughter, Hannah Jensen Paquette. He spent most of his professional career traveling the globe as an international auto parts merchant.
In 2004, Niels married Susan Sward, a Rhode Island native and recently retired art teacher from the West Warwick School District. While theirs may have been a “later in life” marriage, everyone who knew them bore witness to the deep mutual love they shared. Together, they enjoyed many adventures including travels to Italy, France, and Denmark. The couple also built a second home in Negril, Jamaica, and split their time between Rhode Island and Jamaica.
Niels played soccer his entire adult life until falling ill in 2019. He especially enjoyed his many years playing with the New England Over-the-Hill Soccer League. As much as he loved soccer, he spent most of his spare time with his large extended family who loved him very much. Niels enjoyed entertaining and no family gathering was complete without Niels leading guests in a rendition of a Danish snaps song called, “Vi sejler op ad åen” or “We Sail Up the River.”
Besides his wife, Susan, of Charlestown, Mr. Jensen leaves behind his loving daughter Hannah Jensen Paquette and her husband Erik of Putnam, CT; stepdaughters, Hannah Hazelton and her husband Jarrod of North Smithfield, RI, and Rachel Brumley and her husband Nathan of Livermore, CA; and his two granddaughters, Gwen and Morgan.
He also leaves behind sisters Ingelise Haakonsen and Jette Rye Jørgensen, brother John Jensen, and all of his large Danish family. He will be greatly missed and remembered with much love by all of his extended family and friends.
Niels’ family would like to thank Dr. Alexander Raufi and Lifespan, the staff at The Miriam Hospital, visiting nurse Barbara LaMontagne RN, and Hope Health Hospice, Team South.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope Health Hospice RI or The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
“We sail up the river, we sail down again. That was a great song, let’s sing it again.”
