Pomfret Ctr. – Melvin L. Hagar, Sr., 94, of Hampton Rd., formerly of Madison and Branford, CT, passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at St. Joseph Living Center. He was the loving husband of Thelma (Ferretti) Hagar. Born in Round Bay, Nova Scotia Canada, a place he held dear to his heart all his life. He was the son of the late Cecil and Edna (Hagar) Hagar.
Melvin was a graduate of the University of New Haven and worked as an accountant for Winchester Manufacturing in New Haven, CT. He was a deacon with the First Baptist Church of Branford for 16 years. He enjoyed eating lobster and venison sausage. A good game of Scrabble, Cribbage, puzzles and playing solitaire, and in his younger years his black 1961 VW Beetle, fishing, clamming hunting, and motorcycle riding. Although he faced many adversities in his life, it never stopped his desire to live life to the fullest. “He wanted to live life!” Once dad drove his red VW Golf, all the way to Lake Winnipesaukee all by himself, a small feat for some, but considering dad lived with one eye most of his life, it was quite the accomplishment.
In addition to his wife, Melvin is survived by his sons, Melvin L. Hagar, Jr. and his wife Joan of Carey, IL, and Michael G. Hagar of PA; his daughter, Joanne Uhlinger and her husband Vernon of Pomfret Center; and his grandchildren, Adam Hagar and his wife Kimberleigh, Megan Hagar and partner Clare, Cheyenne and her husband Mathieu Baker; great granddaughter Scarlett and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, the late Burton Hagar; and his sisters, the late Alta Powelson and Grace Hagar.
The family of Melvin Hagar, Sr. would like to express a special thank you to the staff of the Saint Joseph Living Center, for the love and care that they provided.
Services are private and have been entrusted to the Gilman Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Church St., Putnam, CT 06260. “To have a friend is to be a friend” (a quote often said by dad). I’m so sorry to hear about melvins passing! I was a CNA at st. Joseph’s and I immediately connected with him. Melvin was the absolute sweetest man! I left in April 2020 because of covid and being pregnant. I will forever miss him and his beautiful daughter! God bless his family and friends ❤️
