Malcolm E. Schumann, Jr.

Published: June 9, 2007 Leave A Condolence

Malcolm

1942-2007

Malcolm “Mal” Schumann died on Tuesday, May 29, 2007 at Day Kimball Hospital surrounded by his devoted family after a short but valiant battle with cancer.  Mal was born on January 28, 1942, in Queens, New York, the son of the late Kathryn (Rambonnet) Schumann and Malcolm Schumann Sr.  He married Lesley Graham in Stamford, CT on July 3, 1965.

Mal earned his B.S., M.S., and M.B.A. degrees at the University of Connecticut and his Doctorate of Business at the University of New Haven.  Mal worked nationally and internationally for Raybestos-Manhattan before moving to Woodstock in 1986 to run Sanitary Dash Inc.  More recently he was pleased to teach business classes at Nichols College and Quinebaug Valley Community College. Throughout the course of his business career, Mal was the recipient of many awards and citations for his work and skills, management efforts, and organizational acumen.

Mal was proud to be a Mason, a member of the East Woodstock Church where he rang hand bells and sang in the choir, and a Putnam Rotarian.  Ever modest, Mal was both surprised and delighted to be named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Putnam Rotary several years ago. He also served with great dedication and distinction as a member and President of the Board of Directors of Day Kimball Hospital and the Friends of Hospice Committee.

Mal is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Lesley, his daughter, Kristen and her husband, Thom Wedegis of Woodstock, his son, Rob and his wife, Megan of Orange, CT, and their sons, Mal’s beloved grandchildren, Evan and Ryan.  Mal is also survived by his sister, Joy and her husband, Stewart Nazzaro of Fairfield, CT, Jan and Tom Moeller, Jack and Pat Sante, and many nieces and nephews in Canada.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Service and Reception at 11:00 am Saturday June 9th, 2007 in The East Woodstock Congregational Church, 206 Woodstock Rd. E. Woodstock. Calling hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, Mal asked very particularly and specifically that memorial donations please be made to his two favorite non-profits, Hospice and Palliative Care of Northeastern CT, P.O. Box 632, Putnam, CT 06260 or The East Woodstock Congregational Church, P.O. Box 156, East Woodstock, CT 06244.  Gilman Funeral home is entrusted with his arrangements.
