Nelson, John web PicWoodstock- John Harold Nelson, Jr. 83 of Child Hill Road died Tuesday December 11, 2007. He was the beloved husband of Joan (Murdock) Nelson for 44 years. Born and raised in Pomfret, CT he was the son of the late John H. Nelson, Sr. and Mary (Maher) Nelson.

Mr. Nelson graduated from Putnam High School as a three-sport athlete and attended Bryant College in Smithfield, RI.  He was a World War II Navy Veteran serving in the South Pacific.  John was Vice President of Williamsville Buff Company, which was acquired by Divine Brother’s Co. in the 1950’s.  He remained Vice President and traveled extensively as a Senior Executive for over 50 years; retiring three years ago at the age of 80. John loved being with his family and would vacation with them each year on Block Island, RI.  He enjoyed golfing, gardening and was an avid sports enthusiast.  He was a member of the Quinnatisset Country Club, VFW Post 1523 and the Putnam Lodge of Elks.

Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons; Thomas Nelson and his wife Traci of Woodstock and Michael Nelson and his wife Mandy of Thompson; two daughters, Jane Green and her husband Keith of Woodstock and Sue Kilborn and her husband Kevin also of Woodstock; three brothers, William Nelson, James Nelson and Paul Nelson; a sister, Anne Navarro and four grandchildren, John Nelson, James Nelson, Benjamin Green and Judd Green.

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John’s family from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, on Thursday, December 13, 2007 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church Street, Putnam, CT, A gathering will begin at 9:00 am on Friday, December 14, 2007 in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in Most Holy Trinity Church, 568 Pomfret Street, Pomfret, CT.  Burial will follow in St. Mary‘s Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the DKH Center for Health Aging, 15 Marshall St., Putnam, CT 06260.
