1923 – 2022
Putnam -Ms. Ida Markowitz, age 98, of East Putnam, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 17, 2022, in her home of 75 years, surrounded by friends and family.
She was born in 1923, in Killingly CT, the daughter of the late Nixon Tubman, and Eva Caouette Tubman.
Her husband, Peter J Markowitz, also passed away February 17, 22 years ago. He preceded Ida in death, as well as her son Michael Markowitz, and daughter Joyce Eber.
She is survived by her children, Paul Markowitz, Merrie Chartier, Max Markowitz, 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
Ida graduated from Killingly High School in 1941 and was married to Peter J Markowitz on Feb 7,1942.
In 1947 Ida and her late husband Peter purchased their home in East Putnam where they ran a successful chicken farming business for 50 years. During those years Ida forged strong relationships with her neighbors, and employed, and mentored many young people from the local area. Ida was a leader in the 4H community where she enjoyed spending time with and giving back to the young people of the community. Ida was kind to everyone and welcomed all, she always opened her home and table to anyone in need. Ida is remembered by those who knew her well as never having a cross word to say, and never criticizing anyone, she was such an exception.
Ida had many friends, and was a part of the Putnam Homemakers Club, whose name later changed to The Mantup In-Betweeners, beginning in the 1950’s. The ladies club members learned to cook, upholster, and refinish second-hand furniture, metal engraving, painting, and played cards and games. The ladies would send two of their members to the extension center to learn how to complete the projects, and those ladies would then bring the information back to the club for everyone to learn how to complete the projects’. They met once a week, and after each session they had a luncheon which was always at one of the members’ homes and the other members provided the lunch. If they were a part of the club, they were a member/friend for life.
Ida and her best friend, Alice Smith, travelled to New York City on the Secretary bus twice a year to see a Broadway play. They had many adventures together, Ida was described as the worst driver, but the best navigator.
Ida was loved by many and will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know her.Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Ida’s family from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 20, 2022 in Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St, Putnam, CT. A luncheon will follow at the Elks Lodge, 64 Edmond St, Putnam, CT. Memorial donations in Ida’s name may be made to Community Kitchen, 53 Grove St, Putnam, CT 06260. For Steve Markowitz and family: we know how much your Gramma meant to you. I can remember way back in elementary school how we both compared our grandmas and how they both knew the old ways and tried to teach us. Hopefully we can carry on the knowledge and pass it down. Steve and Pat Tetreault

Dear Markowitz family: Ida’s funeral is over and there was such an abundance of love offered to Ida and her family that I came away feeling so good for my dear friend. All of her family were there as well as so many neighbors and friends. Special recognition should be made to her daughter, Merrie, who took such loving care of Ida for many years and especially in her final days. Ida is now with her children, Joyce and Michael in God’s Heaven. She will always be loved and remembered by those she left behind. Rest in Peace my friend…you truly deserve it. Your friend, Alice
