1948 – 2020

Putnam – Harvey E. Bennett, age 72, died Saturday, October 10, 2020, at home, after a very brief illness.

Harvey was born on September 26, 1948 in Putnam and he was the son the late Herbert B. and Noella (Lariviere) Bennett.  He was educated in the Putnam School System and was a whiz at math, which was evident in his meticulous entries in his black binder. After leaving school following his 8th grade year, he began his lifelong career in manufacturing, having worked early on at a local plastics company and working the past 52 years, as a machinist, at J.M Dean in Putnam, retiring fully in 2020.

On October 11, 1969, he was united in marriage to Alma “Elsie” (Lannaville) Bennett.  They were married for 28 years, until her death in 1997.  Harvey is survived by his children, Scott J. Bennett and his wife Misty of Putnam; Heidi N. Bennett of Putnam and her companion Wayne Moore of Rhode Island; Joyce A. Cote and her companion Hugh McLaughlin III of Putnam; Steven M. Heath and his wife Rose of Thompson; Brenda J. Heath, with whom he lived in Putnam; Jamie J. Heath and his wife Debra of Putnam; his brothers, Raymond Bennett of Dayville, Leonard Bennett of Putnam and Michael Bennett of Woodstock; a sister, Elaine Eastman of Dayville.  He was a beloved Pepe/Pop to 17 grandchildren, Kristian Burke, Ashley Burke, Bradley Bennett, Samantha Bennett, Melissa Rhinehart, Wendy Heath, Kacey Terranova (also his Goddaughter), Courtney Cote, Jordan Cote, Stephanie Braham, Matthew Heath, Jason Heath, Earlene Ames, Adam Heath and Erin Muscato.  Also, his 23 Great-Grandchildren, Leah and Lexi Bennett, Zachary York, Jade Haney, Jameson Rhinehart, MacKenzie  Heath, Madison Heath, Jayden Black, Brandon Cacciapuoti, Cheyenne Kennedy, Hailey Terranova, Kelsey Terranova, Brianna Worden, Cassidy Worden, Gage Willison, Allie Falke, Justin Falke, Mikaela Andreas, Khloe Demers, Arthur Hopkins, Mackenzie Rae Heath, Alexandria Heath, Dominic Muscato, Aidan Heath and Emma Muscato; and his 3 great-great-grandchildren, Jacie and Ezra York, Brystol Haney.  In addition, he leaves his companion and long-time family friend, Diane Livernois of Putnam.  He was predeceased by three sons, Eugene “Huey” Heath, Allard  “Tyke” Heath Jr. and Curt Heath.

In addition to his manufacturing career, Harvey worked for several years at Bald Hill Restaurant and Vernon Styles Inn.  Harvey and Alma had a long career in Foster Care, having fostered over 50 children.  Never one to argue, when he’d had enough, he would say to his wife, “Woman, calm you nerves, you’re getting emotional” ,the kids would get a “now there”!  He was a life-long resident of Putnam and Thompson.  A strong family man, his greatest pleasure was the time he spent with his family.  He also enjoyed sitting outside on the back porch, feeding the birds and squirrels, talking with his neighbors, taking his daily walk around town and spending time with the “Laundromat Ladies.”  He was an avid New York Yankees and Dallas Cowboys fan and was an ardent poker player. Harvey also enjoyed watching horror movies.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 2 pm in Saint Mary’s Cemetery, Providence Street, Putnam.  The Very Reverend David Choquette will officiate the service.  There are no calling hours.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Gilman Funeral Home and Crematory, 104 Church Street, Putnam.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hospice and Palliative Care, 320 Pomfret Street, Putnam, CT 06260. For memorial guestbook please visit www.GilmanAndValade.com. Due to the currant Covid-19 restrictions and at the families request masks must be worn while attending Harvey’s services.

Dad, you were the consummate family man, an amazing father and grandfather. Our hearts are broken, collectively, that you are no longer with us and that we will no longer get to enjoy your whit. Forever in our hearts and on our minds, we say this to you:

“Family is Forever”

You will be missed in so many ways,
there was no one quite like you.
You’ll be a part of this family’s heart
in everything we do.

Though no one else can take your place,
as we think of you and picture your face,
good memories will help to keep us strong.
Family is forever and the best of you,
in our hearts will live on.

Condolence from SUSAN A COREY on October 11th, 2020 4:44 pm

Our family is greatly reduced for losing this quiet man who was so strong and loving. May God’s angels hasten his arrival in Heaven where he may sit in the arms of his Savior and look into the eyes of his beloved wife, Aunt Elsie. I pray God’s angels touch our hearts and walk with us through this season of sorrow, helping us to heal as we cry our tears of grief. May each teardrop help those of us left behind to let go and let God into our hearts. May all Uncle Harvey’s memories remind us how grateful we are for the precious time we had together and also remind us to appreciate those we still have. I ask this in Jesus’name. Amen
