Genevieve

Genevieve J. “Gen” Helt, 75, of Putnam, CT passed away Wednesday morning, February 3, 2010 following multiple medical problems.  She was born Genevieve Josephine Mikrut on March 17, 1934, in Brooklyn, NY to her parents Walter and Marie (Olpinski) Mikrut. She leaves behind a daughter, Lauretta M. Helt, of San Diego, CA, two sons, Leonard M. Helt of Putnam, CT, and Lawrence M. Helt of Dudley, MA, and daughter in law Eileen Helt of Webster, MA. The youngest of ten children, she is survived by two sisters, Florence Zubikowski of St. Petersburg, FL, and Stephanie Swenson of Lebanon, NJ. She also leaves behind multiple nieces and nephews, four grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Genevieve graduated from Bay Ridge High School in Brooklyn, NY, and went on to a career as an administrative professional, which included 10 years at Howard Brothers Manufacturing in Auburn, MA, and 15 years at Kenyon Oil/Xtra Mart in Quinibaug, CT.  Her career led her to become a member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), formerly known as Professional Secretaries International (PSI), of which she was the former president of the Southbridge Chapter.

Genevieve was also a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary / Albert J. Breault Post 1523 in Putnam, CT, where she also tended bar for many years.  She had also tended bar at the VFW post in Quinibaug, CT, and at the former Irish American Club in Putnam, CT.

Genevieve did not wish to have a wake or funeral, but rather have people remember her as they knew her.  A memorial service will be held on a date to yet be determined before being laid to rest in Pine Island, NY.  Any well wishes or memories you may want to share can be sent to the Helt Family, c/o Leonard Helt, 97 School St. Apt. 104, Putnam, CT 06260. In lieu of flowers, we ask that a donation be made to whichever charity you may prefer.  Gilman Funeral home has been entrusted with her arrangements.
