
Elena (Smilgevicius) Miknius
1918 – 2010
Putnam, CT – Elena (Smilgevicius) Miknius, 91, of Thurber Rd., died January 1, 2010 in Matulaitis Nursing Home. She was the loving wife of the late Stasys Miknius. Born in Uzventis, Lithuania, she was the daughter of the late Jonas and Stefania (Bucevicius) Smilgevicius.
In Lithuania, Mrs. Miknius graduated from Dotnova University with a degree in Agronomy. Due to the soviet occupation of Lithuania after World War II, her family immigrated to the United States in 1949 living in New Jersey and Connecticut. She worked in the Pathology Laboratory for Pfizer for 27 years. Mrs. Miknius enjoyed reading, classical music, travel and gardening.
Elena is survived by her daughters, Laima Price and her husband George of Wellesley MA, and Angela Miknius and her husband James Frenzel of New York, NY; her sister, Janina Petrusis of Putnam; two grandchildren, Elyte Moffat and her husband Brian of Hopkinton, MA and Edward Mockus and his wife Ruth of Whitinsville, MA; and five great-grandchildren, Stephanie, Shannon, Jenna, Kelley, and Erik.
Relatives and friends are invited to Elena’s Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am on Saturday, January 9, 2010 in Matulaitis Chapel, 10 Thurber Road, Putnam CT. Burial will take place in Gate of Heaven Cemetery at a later date. Memorial Donations may be made in her memory to the Immaculate Conception Convent, 600 Liberty Hwy, Putnam, CT 06260. Gilman Funeral Home is entrusted with her arrangements.

I do not know how common the name Bucevicius might be; my grandmother’s name was Frances Martha (Bucevicius) Dainauskas, 1885-1957. Her father was Joe, and her mother was Eva Zilinskas. All were born in Lithuania.
