Woodstock – Edward J. Charland, Sr., 85, of Pleasant View Drive, died Thursday, July 26, 2012, in his home. He was the loving husband of Jeannette (LaRochelle) Charland for 64 years. Born in West Warwick, RI, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Silva) Charland.
Mr. Charland worked as a plumber for the Connecticut Department of Corrections. He also worked for Pratt and Whitney. He enjoyed traveling, spending his winters in Florida, reading, and watching sports. He also loved his cat, Zoe.
Edward was a World War II Navy Veteran. He was a member of the American Legion Post III in Woodstock, VFW Post 10088 in Thompson, and was the past President of Connecticut State Employee Association.
In addition to his wife, Edward is survived by; his son, Edward Charland, Jr. of Woodstock; his daughter, Janet Oloff and her husband Richard of Ashford; his sisters, Anne Dery and her husband Ken of Woodstock and Doris Gefvert of Putnam; four grandchildren, Michael Charland, Jeffrey Such, Amy Kollbeck, and Keri Egan; seven great-grandchildren, Jasmine Charland, Blake, Dominic, and Avery Kollbeck, and Brayden, Kailynn, and Addison Egan; and his sister in law Rita Watts and her husband Gary. Edward is predeceased by his sister Delores Ide.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Edward’s family at 9:00 am on Monday, July 30, 2012 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in St. Mary Church, 230 Providence St, Putnam, CT. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Northeastern Connecticut, P.O. Box 632, Putnam, CT 06260. So well liked, well respected, and a strong person in many ways – the Pepe you were to us grandchildren, how you loved, helped and believed in us always is the Pepe I will cherish and remember.
