Scandalito Daniel Sr. webpic

Woodstock – Daniel J. Scandalito, Sr., 83, of Laurel Dr., passed away on Tuesday, May 5, 2015, at his home. He was the loving husband of Joan (Woodbury) Scandalito, his high school sweetheart and wife of 62 years. Born in Gloucester, MA, he was the son of the late Salvatore and Jennie (Ciarametaro) Scandalito.

Mr. Scandalito was proud to be a United States Navy Veteran serving during the Korean War. Subsequent to his military service, he moved his family to Woodstock and became a well-known, self-employed local builder for over 55 years. He left his professional touch on every project and his personal touch on every customer. He was a member of the Putnam Elks, the American Legion, and a past member of the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association. He enjoyed every day of work but also found time to enjoy fishing, hunting, and walking in the woods. Having grown up in the fishing port of Gloucester, he had unending attachment to the beauty of the back shore coastline and the allure of the fishing industry and the fishing boat fleet.

In addition to his wife, Daniel is survived by his sons, Daniel J. Scandalito, Jr. and his wife Petra of Woodstock; and John Scandalito and his wife Jamie of Pomfret; his daughters, Laura Andert and her husband Michael of Eastford, and Linda White and her husband Kevin of Woodstock; his brother, Jack Scandalito of Gloucester, MA; his sisters, Pauline Dion of Gloucester, MA, and Grace Budrow of Gloucester, MA; and grandchildren Danielle White, Lyndon White, Daniel Scandalito, Olivia Andert, Maria Scandalito, Julia Scandalito, and Sophia Scandalito. His family will be forever grateful for the enjoyable life he gave them as well as instilling in them the importance of integrity, a strong work ethic, close ties to family and friends and to keep smiling. He is missed already and the family wishes to thank all his friends and acquaintances who have already reached out with thoughts, prayers and fond memories.

As requested by the family, services are private and have been entrusted to the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam, CT 06260. Memorial donations may be made to the Woodstock Volunteer Fire Association, P.O. Box 222, South Woodstock, CT 06267.

This write up is so perfectly written and is my total memory of Uncle Danny. He was gifted by God with a beautiful warm smile that just made you feel good to be around him. He enjoyed good conversation. CT always had and will continue to have a special feel for me and my siblings and many cousins because it was and will always be associated with Uncle Danny and Aunt Joan and their beautiful family. There were always lots of laughs, good food and beautiful peaceful nature all around the home. It was a special haven for us all. Thank you Uncle Danny for giving to us all in your special ways. We will never forget you and our hearts are broken to know that you are gone from this life. Our prayers and love are with you all.

Condolence from Scott & Krista Hazelton on May 11th, 2015 9:32 am

Our condolences to everyone. Dan will be missed. We appreciated all the work he did at our house over the years. It was nice to have someone you could trust & cared that the job was well done. He was also a friend that we shared a drink with at times on the porch by the woodstove. Always had a story to tell about times gone by.

Condolence from Pauline & Dan Danish on May 11th, 2015 3:54 pm

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all of the family. My mothe always speaks of Danny and how he would visit her during Fiestas. I remember him most on how he influenced me at an early age with his skills as a carpenter. He always had a smile on his face and a positive outlook. I will always remember him as such.

Condolence from Pam Rosenlund on May 12th, 2015 3:16 pm

One of my fondest memories: Danny and my Dad sitting on the back porch, with a glass of wine in hand, solving the problems of the world. He built the home my parents lived in, adding to it along the way. He and Joan became good friends for my parents; they lived close by in that Woodstock neighborhood. His presence will be sorely missed. May the family find comfort in the love they and their friends offer to them now. I know my Mom feels the same way ~~ Pam

My condolences to Aunt Joan and my cousins Danny, Laura, Linda, John and all of your families. Many of my best childhood memories are of the times spent on trips to Connecticut with my parents. I’ll always remember that big, genuine smile and that vice-like handshake whenever we saw him. No doubt you’ll hear this from so many of his nieces and nephews… but I will truly miss our “favorite uncle”.

Condolence from Dan Scandalito on May 14th, 2015 10:47 am

Dear Dad,
Sorry it has taken me a while to write but things have now started to calm down and the reality has hit me that I won’t see you again when I visit home. But always know that you will be in my thoughts every day and you will continue to be an influence on me the rest of my life.
I know you were having a very tough time these last few months and I wish I could have somehow taken that away from you. Your suffering was so apparent in the talks we had. I also wish we could have found a better way to help you through it.
Please always know that you were a great father to me and I am proud to say I am your son. You were a success in life and a winner in every sense of the word. You gave me a great upbringing and instilled a moral compass in me that has helped me live a life you would have expected. You came from a time that meant guidance didn’t always come in the form or words (ouch!) but it worked!
They say the apple does not fall far from the tree and I have felt that all my life. I love our family as you did. I love the ocean as you did. I love going to Gloucester. I love being outdoors as you did. I love a good laugh. I love working with wood as you did. I will never be able to hold one of your old saws without feeling your hand on mine. I know you will always be looking over my shoulder. Thank you Dad.
I have always been proud of your Navy service and have always felt that service to our country is not an option. I could not help but follow your lead but as you know, the Marine Corps got their hands on me first!
I thank you for putting me through college. I am thankful for having worked alongside you on so many houses and roofs. I am thankful for you showing me how to bait a fishing hook and to withstand the cold of hunting (although sitting for a few hours in the cold is still a challenge). I thank you the boats you gave us to have fun on the lake.
I thank for the vacations you took us on and the memories you recorded on that 8mm camera. You blinded us with camera lights every Christmas and we all looked forward to getting those 3 minutes of developed film back so we could sit down as a family and watch ourselves again and again. We will still enjoy them.
There is some much more I can say to you but I am glad I had to chance to tell you many of them before you left us.
Your influence, your good nature, your smile and that twinkle in your eye are permanently etched in my mind.
I love you Dad!
Your son,
Danny

Condolence from Tom Laskey on May 20th, 2015 8:34 am

Dear Joan
It was so sad and so difficult when I learned that Danny had passed away. Danny was so much a big part of my life for many years. I could not have done my projects without him — he was always there to put the beautiful finishing touches on the buildings that I built with him. We enjoyed each other every day– not just on the job but outside of work also. Joan, you and Danny have a wonderful family. May the memories you cherish be long and the pain you feel be brief. With my deepest sympathy for your loss.

Tom Laskey
