1926 – 2023
Woodstock – Catherine J. “Kay” Phoenix, 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep at her Woodstock, CT, home on January 22, 2023.
Kay was born in Stratford, CT, the daughter of the late George and Anna (Kotradi) Jankura. She was a graduate of Stratford High School.
Kay married David A “Dave” Phoenix on July 13, 1947, at Holy Ghost Russian Orthodox Church in Bridgeport, CT. They were married for 74 years until his passing on May 22, 2022.
Dave’s Navy career as a submariner kept the family well-traveled, with Kay seamlessly managing the many moves with their four children. They were stationed at various times in California, Connecticut, Florida, Pennsylvania, Idaho, Hawaii, Virginia, and Spain–creating many memories and friendships along the way. She was a masterful homemaker and the foundation of the family.
Kay was a beloved “Nana” to her eight grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was a superb cook; a skilled seamstress; a first-rate bowler; a Cub Scout den mother; a Little League concession-stand worker; an expert crossword puzzle, Jumble, and Cryptoquip solver; and an ardent competitor in family card games.
Catherine is survived by her two sons, David (Gayle) of North Stonington, CT, and Paul (Lindsay) of Philomath, OR; her daughter Nancy (Chris) of Dayville, CT; and her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter Loretta; grandson Neil; and siblings Michael, Ann, George, John, her twin Nicholas, and Mary.
The family would like to give a special thank you to caregiver Ezinne Alozie and the Day Kimball Hospital Hospice team for their care and support.
Funeral services are private and have been entrusted to the Gilman Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Church St., Putnam, CT. For memorial guestbook please visit www.GilmanAndValade.com.
