April 2, 1929- November 23, 2019
Woodstock – Antoinetta Cortigiano, 90 years old, affectionately called Nella, passed away peacefully in Danielson, Connecticut on November 23, 2019, following a long illness. She was born on April 2, 1929 in Rossano, Italy to Renato and Giuseppina Donato. She was married in Italy in 1955 to Leonard J. Cortigiano, Jr. (who passed away in 2003), following a whirlwind courtship.
She emigrated to the United States that year on board the Andrea Doria and later became a United States citizen. The couple settled in Bridgeport, Connecticut where they had two children, Laura and Leonard. The family moved to Trumbull, Connecticut in 1958. Antoinetta was a homemaker for many years, and she enjoyed raising her children, gardening, and hosting large family gatherings. She and her husband frequently enjoyed dinner and dancing with family and friends. She enjoyed bowling, and racquetball, and spent many happy years pursuing those pastimes. She attended ceramics classes and enjoyed displaying many of her creative pieces.
She traveled to her native Italy many times over the years to maintain close relationships with her own mother and her five siblings who predeceased her: Leda, Teresa, Aldo, Massimo, and Domenico, their spouses, and her many nieces and nephews. Occasionally, she and her husband enjoyed spending the winter months in Florida with friends. In addition, she was an avid fan of professional Tennis. She also enjoyed socializing often with her friends. More recently, she passed the days with her loving caregivers, her children, her granddaughter, and close friends and family nearby who loved her deeply and were there to support her. She is survived by her children, Leonard Cortigiano (and his spouse, Keary Nichols) and Laura Cotnoir (and her spouse, Marc Cotnoir), her beloved granddaughter, Nicole Cotnoir, several nieces and nephews in the United States and several relatives in Italy.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Gilman Funeral Home and Crematory, 104 Church St. Putnam, CT. 06260. The family will host a Celebration of Antoinetta’s Life for family and friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to a charity of your choice.
