Anthony (Tony), born August 21, 1930, in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, passed away peacefully at his stepdaughter’s home in Connecticut on July 26, 2021, at age 90 from congestive heart failure.
As a young man in Hamilton, Tony apprenticed first as an electrician and carpenter, and ultimately became an accomplished cabinet maker. On or about 1954, he accepted a job at the newly formed United Nations in New York where he built a career lasting 30 years, first in the cabinet shop and eventually as a General Foreman. He never tired of the richness of the UN culture.
Outside of his career, Tony maintained a healthy curiosity and an open mind for all things new to him. He was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club and the Northport Yacht Club. He was an avid reader, enjoyed travel, sailing, golfing, dancing, attending concerts as well as snow birding in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Nancy of 42 years, daughter, Karen (Paul), and brothers Don (Betty) and Mike (Helen). He is survived by his brother, Bill (Pat) and stepchildren, Kim Gilbert (Ken), Lynn Wilkanowski, Sue Langman, and Robert Wilkanowski (Suzanne). He relished time with grandchildren Kristina (Morgan), Kimberly (Chris), Amy (Andy), Billy (Kristina), Sarah, Joseph, and great grandchildren Leif, Luke, Will, Lincoln, Ace and Rex.
Even after life’s toughest losses, Tony’s spirit remained positive and kind. He always referred to himself as “Lucky Tony.”
A service will be held on Saturday September 18, 2021 at 12:00 noon at First Presbyterian Church of Northport.
Donations can be made in Tony’s honor to The American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Association. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the Gilman Funeral Home & Crematory, 104 Church St., Putnam, CT 06260.
