Alice G. Hackenschmidt

1922 – 2009 

Woodstock – Alice G. Hackenschmidt, 87, of Brickyard Road, died Sunday, November 29, 2009, in the Matulaitis Nursing Home.  She was the loving wife of the late Victor Hackenschmidt.  Born in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Genevieve (Bicknell) Goodwin.  Alice worked for Pratt & Whitney aircraft in Hartford during WWII, and was the first woman to work in the engine test house.  She married Victor Hackenschmidt, a Staff Sergeant with the Connecticut National Guard, 169th Infantry, served in the Pacific theatre, including Guadalcanal campaign.  Alice and Victor were married in Ashford, Connecticut, May 26, 1945.  The newlyweds drove across the country to his next duty station at Camp Adair, Oregon, just north of Corvallis.  He was discharged from the U.S. Army October 5, 1945.  Alice and Victor decided to remain in Corvallis to raise their family.  Victor passed away in July 1983, and Alice stayed on until 1996 at which time she moved to Beaverton to live with her son.  In 2006, she moved to Woodstock to live with her sister Beatrice.  She was active in the Evangelical Covenant Church of Woodstock. 

Alice is survived by her son, Victor; her daughters, Carol Drlica of California City, CA, and Heidi Hughes of Park City, UT; her brothers, Robert Goodwin and his wife Marguerite of Woodstock, Conrad Goodwin and his wife Lorraine of North Windham,  and Philip Goodwin of Woodstock; her sisters, Constance Dombroski of Thompson, and Beatrice Bebbington of Woodstock; her grandchildren, Dr. Sara Arnold, Adelle Martin, Angela Hackenschmidt, Holly Shannon, Francie Hackenschmidt, Amy Hackenschmidt, Joe Hackenschmidt, Blake Hughes, Abby Hughes, Taylor Crawford and Marshall Crawford; her great grandchild, Skye Arnold; her 34 nieces and nephews and many grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, the late Ralph Goodwin, Lawrence Goodwin, and Arthur Goodwin; and her sisters, the late Ruth Dion, Emily Richards, Clara Ellson; and her great grandson Vincent Shields. 

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service for Alice at 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 13, 2009 in the Evangelical Covenant Church of Woodstock, 24 Child Hill Road, Woodstock, CT 06281.  Gilman Funeral Home is entrusted with her arrangements.
