Sturbridge – Lillian Thomas, 88, formerly of Podunk Road, died Saturday March 27, 2010. She was the loving wife of the late Herbert Thomas. Born in Springfield MA, she was the daughter of the late Eva Dempsey.
Mrs. Thomas owned and operated Herbie’s Roast Beef in Sturbridge until her retirement. She liked to sew and make crafts.
Lillian is survived by her sons, Paul Thomas of Chester VT, John Thomas and Raymond Thomas of Comfort WV; her daughters, Rose Lombardi and Vera Thomas of Florida, Eve LaFleche of Putnam CT, and Lillian Hesselman of Willimantic, CT; 27 grandchildren; and 45 great-grandchildren; and her dear friend, Anna Fruggiero. She was predeceased by her sons, Herbert Thomas Jr. and William Thomas.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Lillian’s family at 10:00 am, Thursday April 1, 2010 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam followed by her Funeral Service at 10:30 am in the funeral home. Burial will follow in St. Anne Cemetery, Sturbridge, MA.

N. Grosvenordale – Leo J. Duchesne, 75 of Rachel Drive died Saturday, March 27, 2010 in UMASS Memorial Healthcare. Born in N. Grosvenordale, he was the son of the late Joseph and Regina (Hebert) Duchesne.
Mr. Duchesne worked as a supervisor in the packaging department for Superior Bakery for 40 years.
He is survived by a Brother-in-law, George Albetski of N. Grosvenordale; his aunt Matilda Duchesne of N. Grosvenordale, and several cousins. He also leaves his dog Sam and his cats Archie & Edith. He was the brother of the late Raymond Duchesne and Gloria Albetski.

North Grosvenordale – Albertine G. Larose, 83, of Riverside Drive, died Tuesday, March 23, 2010 in Day Kimball Hospital. Born in Putnam, CT, she was the daughter of the late John and Yvonne (Brunette) Gomes.
Mrs. Larose worked at Crabtree and Evelyn as an assembler. She also worked at Anglo Fabrics, Cluette & Peabody, and Godzik’s Market. She was a communicant of Saint Joseph’s Church. She enjoyed Polka music and dancing. She also enjoyed gardening, birds, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
Albertine is survived by her sons, Leo Larose, Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, Robert Larose and his wife Cheryl of Eastford, CT, Ernest Larose and his wife Debra of North Grosvenordale; her brothers Albert Gomes of North Grosvenordale, and Arthur Gomes of Charlton, MA; her sisters, Theresa Evans of Thompsan, Delores Levine of Montana, and Janet Peckham of Thompson; 4 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

Pomfret – Evelyn (Corcoran) Quigley, 88, formerly of Fox Hill Road in Pomfret, died Monday, March 22, 2010 in Coventry RI. She was the loving wife of the late Andrew Quigley. Born in Killingly, she was the daughter of the late James and Anita (Billings) Corcoran.
Mrs. Quigley graduated from St. Vincent School of Nursing in Worcester MA, and later worked as a nurse for Day Kimball Hospital and other health care providers. She also worked as a clerk in the Pomfret Post Office.
Mrs. Quigley enjoyed cooking and traveling.
Evelyn is survived by her two sons, Michael Quigley of Ann Arbor, MI, and Andrew Quigley Jr. of Pomfret; 5 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Kathleen Quigley.

On March 19, 2010, Laurie A. Champany, 41, of Pomfret CT passed away as a result of breast cancer complications. The most important thing in her life was her family. After 16 years of marriage she was still the beautiful bride of Ben Champany who never failed to remind her so. She so loved and was very proud of her children, Liam and Lexie. Laurie is also survived by her devoted parents, Robert and Diane Rasicot of Willimantic CT; sisters Lisa Hawthorne, her children Chelsea and Ciara of Brooklyn CT; Tammy Girardin, her husband Tom and their children Jacob and Matthew of Deltona FL; her grandmother, Florence Desjarlais of North Windham CT; in-laws Ronald and Beverly Champany and the Champany family of Pomfret CT; and so many special friends.
Laurie’s community service included serving on the Pomfret Community School Board of Education and the Woodstock Academy Board of Trustees. She was also a Girl Scout Troop leader and was very involved with Woodstock’s Relay for Life. She was proud to have attained her black belt in karate even while undergoing chemotherapy.
“I’ve witnessed strength in its most concentrated form, I’ve witnessed courage in a way which makes the greatest super hero appear weak, and LOVE…you have no idea. So, if you’re ever feeling down after a bad day, or things are just not going your way, just ask me…and I’ll tell you a story”, by Lisa Hawthorne. Laurie was a courageous, selfless loving spirit that will live on in all hearts she has touched.
Visiting hours will be on March 26, 2010 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church Street ,Putnam, CT from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The family invites all who knew Laurie to come and celebrate her life with them at the Pomfret Community School Cafeteria on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 3:00 pm and requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Champany Children’s Fund, c/o Citizens National Bank, P.O. Box 6002, Putnam, CT 06260. A private funeral mass and burial will be held at the family’s convenience.

N. Grosvenordale – Angelo Palazzo, 89, of Riverside Drive., died Monday, March 15, 2010 in Day Kimball Hospital. He was the loving husband of Agnes (Brodeur) Palazzo. Born in West Warwick, RI, he was the son of the late Guisseppe and Antoinette Palazzo.
Mr. Palazzo was a WWII Army Veteran, and then went on to work as a salesperson in the several retail stores. He was the past president of the Putnam Lions Club and served as Chaplin for the Putnam Elks Club. Mr. Palazzo was very active in the formation of the Putnam Little League, and enjoyed gardening and golf.
In addition to his wife, Angelo is survived by his daughters, Mary Palazzo of East Longmeadow, MA, Angela Dwyer of Dudley, MA, Rose Gagnon of Woodstock, and Christine Kingsbury of Thompson; his stepson, David Szpyrka of Plainfield, CT; his sisters, Josephine, Anna, Theresa and Ursala; several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son, the late Clement J. “Sonny” Palazzo.

North Grosvenordale, CT – Dosina (Messier) Dumas, 84, of Lapiere Road, died Wednesday March 10, 2010 in the Webster Manor Nursing Home. She was the loving wife of the late Maurice Dumas who died in 2001. Born in Holyoke, MA, she was the daughter of the late Donat and Dosina (St. Jean) Messier.
Mrs. Dumas was a homemaker who enjoyed cooking. She was a communicant of Saint Joseph Church in North Grosvenordale.
Dosina is survived by her sons, Maurice Dumas, Jr. and his wife Susan of North Grosvenordale, Daniel Dumas of North Grosvenordale; her daughters, Nancy Chartier and her husband Allen of East Killingly, Diane Gaumond of North Carolina; and Christine Dumas of Putnam; her grandchildren Michael Dumas, Gwenn Anne Gaumond, Clifford Gaumond, Henry George Davis, II, Carrie-Ann Davis, Donald Dumas, and Melissa Frechette; and her great grand-daughter, August Frechette. She was predeceased by her son, the late Donald Dumas; a daughter, the late Ann Dumas; and a brother, the late Francis Messier.

Putnam – Sr. Marjorie Furze, 85, a member of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit, died on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 in the Holy Spirit Health Care Center where she had been a resident since 2004.
Sr. Marjorie was born on July 10, 1924 in Fall River, MA, the daughter of the late Charles and Kathryn (Kennedy) Furze. She entered religious life in 1949 and made her religious profession at the Motherhouse in St. Brieuc, France on August 23, 1951. She was then known as Sr. Catherine de Notre Dame.
She earned an R.N. degree from St. Anne Hospital in Fall River prior to entering in 1949. Her first assignment was in Hartford in 1951 where she ministered to the sick as a visiting nurse. In 1953, she became Head Nurse at the Villa St. Joseph, a home for sick and retired Sisters in Putnam, CT. She became a member of the Provincial Council in 1968 until 1971 all the while continuing her work at the Villa St. Joseph. In 1975, she was assigned as Head Nurse at St. Clare Home in Newport, RI. She retired to Manchester, CT in 1998 and was assigned to Notre Dame Convent in Putnam, CT in 2003. As her health declined, she then became a patient at Holy Spirit Health Care Center in 2004.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Calling hours at the Provincial House chapel will be on Friday, March 12, 2010 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm with a Prayer Service at 7:15 pm. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 11:00am in the Holy Spirit Provincial House chapel. Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Putnam, CT.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Daughters of the Holy Spirit Retirement Fund, 72 Church St., Putnam, CT, 06260.

North Grosvenordale – Rozell (Smith) Rogers, 69, of Center Street, died Thursday, March 4, 2010 in Day Kimball Hospital. She was the loving wife of the late Leonard Rogers. Born in Cleveland, TN, she was the daughter of the late Henry Taylor Smith and Roseanne (Prince) Smith.
Mrs. Rogers worked as a housekeeper in the hotel industry and was a member of the Relief Society of the Mormon Church. She was kind and giving, the kind of person that would do anything for anyone. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Rozell is survived by her sons, Leonard Rogers, Jr. of Bradenton, FL, Donald Rogers of Grosvenordale, Michael Rogers of Woodstock, and Billy Rogers of Lake City, FL; her brothers, Glenn P. Smith of Houston, TX, Joseph T. Smith of Lake City, FL, and James D. Webster, MA– Joyce (Fisher) Guilmart, 68, of Pontiac Ave, died Monday, March 8, 2010 in Oakwood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. Born in Meriden, CT, she was the daughter of the late Felix and Theresa (Schimpf) Fisher.
Ms. Guilmart worked as a housekeeper for the Town of Thompson. She was a member of the United Methodist church in Thompson, CT.
Joyce is survived by her son, Steven Guilmart, Jr. of North Grosvenordale; and her close cousin, Elizabeth Walsh of RI.
