North Grosvenordale – Irene Korch, 75, of Plum Rd, died Tuesday, December 15, 2009 in Day Kimball Hospital.  She was the loving wife of the late Donald P. Korch.  Born in Putnam, she was the daughter of the late Arsene and Beatrice (Porier) Blain.

Mrs. Korch worked as a dietician for Lanessa Extended Healthcare in Webster, MA.  She enjoyed knitting and gardening.

Irene is survived by her son, James Korch of Waterford, CT; and her sister Marcella Goulet of Putnam.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am on Tuesday December 22, 2009 in St. Joseph Church, 20 Main St., North Grosvenordale, CT.  Burial will be private.  Memorial donations may be made to the American heart Association, 1 Union Street, Suite 301, Robbinsville, NJ 08691.  Arrangements are entrusted to the Valade Funeral Home, 23 Main Street, North Grosvenordale, CT 06255.

Putnam– Irene M. Raszowski, 87, died Sunday, December 27, 2009, in Matulaitis Nursing Home.  She was the loving wife of the late Joseph Raszowski.  They were married on January 31, 1942.  Born in Manchaug, MA, she was the daughter of the late William and Eva (Lambert) Gauthier.

Irene stayed at home to raise her children until they were older and then she returned to work at Belding Hemingway, and then later worked for Putnam manufacturing in North Grosvenordale until she retired.  In 1987, after her husband passed away, she moved to the Ella Grasso apartments in Putnam, CT for 17 years until her health became an issue and she took residence in Matulaitis Nursing Home in 2004.

Mrs. Raszowski is survived by two daughters, Bette Wojick and her husband Michael of Gaston, SC, and Judi Lachance and her husband John of Thompson; her grandchildren, Audra Collins and her husband Scott, Maryjane Winkler and her husband Paul, Rebecca White and her husband Mark, Andrew Wojcik and his wife April, Jay Lachance and his wife Erica, and Robert Marion, II.; 10 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Jacqueline Marion; her brothers, William Gauthier, Jr., and Eugene Gauthier; and her sister, Mildred Credit. 

Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Irene’s family from 9:00 am to 10:30 am, Wednesday, December 30, 2009 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am in St. Mary Church of the Visitation, 218 Providence St., Putnam.  Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery.

North Grosvenordale– Lee J. Laflamme, 43, of Klondike St., died Saturday December 19, 2009, by injuries sustained in an automobile accident.  Born in Putnam he was the son of Joan (Paquin) Laflamme of N. Grosvenordale and the late Roger Laflamme.

Lee worked as an Operator for Loos & Company.  He had a passion for antiques and a gift for refinishing and restoring furniture and wood stoves.  He enjoyed time with friends and was always ready to lend a hand, share a laugh, or say a kind word.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his brother, Kurt LaFlamme and his wife Kathy of Plainfield, Ct; two nephews, Connor and Spencer LaFlamme of Plainfield; a special friend, Dave Rogers of North Grosvenordale and beloved family and friends.  He will be greatly missed.  He was the brother of the late Scott LaFlamme who died in 2005.

Relatives and friends are invited to Lee’s Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am Saturday December 26, 2009 in St. Joseph Church, 20 Main St., N. Barbara Jane (Johnson) Faucher

1937 – 2009

Thompson – Barbara Faucher, 72, of Quaddick Rd., died Thursday December 17, 2009, in Day Kimball Hospital.  She was the loving wife of Raymond P. Faucher for 54 years.  Born in Providence, RI, she was the daughter of the late Oscar and Jennie (Ciesluk) Johnson.

Mrs. Faucher graduated from St. Joseph High School in Thompson.  She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church.  She was a wonderful mother and housewife and was devoted to her family.  Barbara was a good friend to many and enjoyed crocheting, cooking, music, gardening, playing games with her grandchildren and spending time with family and friends.

Barbara is survived by her six children, Kathleen Morin and her husband Donald of Thompson, Raymond P. Faucher, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Thompson, Peter Faucher of Thompson, Susan Trama and her husband Peter of Thompson, Karen Adair and her husband Perry of Miami, FL, and Paul Faucher and his wife Carla of Thompson; her brother, Richard Johnson of Thompson; her sister, Dorothy Seney of Thompson; 15 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.

Cynthia L. (Nutt) Wilson

Quinebaug – Cynthia L. (Nutt) Wilson, 68, of Center Lane, died Wednesday, December 16, 2009 at home.  Born in Boston, MA, she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Ellen Vera (Twombly) Nutt.

Cynthia retired from Northeast Utilities/ Yankee Gas.  She enjoyed making handcrafted rugs and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren.  She was a UConn Huskies Women’s Basketball fanatic, and followed the Connecticut Suns Basketball Team.  She was a member of the Creation Church in Thompson.  Cynthia was formerly active as a coach for the Thompson Lassie League for many years.

Cynthia is survived by her daughter, Cynthia Saad and her husband Anthony of Oxford, MA; her son, Bernard J. LaFountain, Jr. of Webster, MA; her sisters, Dorothy Alcott of Putnam, “Trudie” Ann Wade of Milford, NH, and Shirley Jean Nolan of Tewksbury, MA; her grandchildren, Jared Saad, Jennifer LaFountain, Anthony LaFountain, and Ryan Prentiss.

Dr. Walter V. Vaitkus

Dr. Walter V. Vaitkus

1920 – 2009

Florida – Dr. Walter Vaitkus died on December 12, 2009 in his home in Juno Beach, Florida, having reached 89 years of age.  Walter was born on April 5, 1920 in Donora, Pennsylvania.  At the age of 2, his mother took him and his siblings to Lithuania where he grew up.  In 1944, he escaped from the advancing Soviet front into Sweden and shortly after was drafted into the United States Army.  He served in Germany as a Corporal in the US Army.  There he met his future wife, Anna Savickaite, a Lithuanian refugee.  After the army, Walter finished dental school in Basel, Switzerland with a DMD degree.  However, this degree was not recognized in the US, so Walter finished another 3 years of study in dentistry at the University of Minnesota and graduated with a DDS degree.

He practiced general dentistry and implantology in Worcester, Massachusetts for over 30 years.  He was a dedicated dentist to his patients.  He was a member of the American Dental Association.  After the break up of the Soviet Union, Walter taught implantology to dentists in the newly independent Lithuania.  Following retirement from private practice, Walter lived in and enjoyed Juno Beach for the past 20 years with his wife.  Walter was a devoted husband, supportive father and loving grandfather.  His kindness, humor, intellectual curiosity, and appreciation of life will be missed by his family and friends.  Walter is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Anna;  his daughter, Dr. Onile Sestokas, son-in-law, Anthony K., grand-daughters Lina and husband, Steve Scroggins, Laura and Rima; son, Dr. Linas and wife Dr. Julie, grandsons Vytas, Linas and Kristijonas; son, Dr. Paul and wife Beverly.  Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Walter’s family from 9:00 to 10:00 am, Saturday December 19, 2009 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam, CT, with a Mass of Christian Burial held at 10:30 am in the Immaculate Conception Chapel, 600 Liberty Highway, Putnam, CT.  Burial with Military Honors will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Putnam.  Memorial Donations may be made in his memory to Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, memo-Orphan Care, 600 Liberty Highway, Putnam, CT, 06260-2503.

Dudley Marcella F. Busha, 78, of Joshua Place, died Tuesday, December 15, 2009 in the Webster Manor.  Born in Grosvenordale, Ct, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Florence (Grenier) LaFlamme.

Marcella worked as a chemical worker for Webco Chemical.  She enjoyed playing bingo and dancing.  She was very talented at crocheting and gave many handmade gifts to her family and friends.  She enjoyed making cheesecake and especially loved spending time with her family. 

Marcella is survived by her daughters, Linda M. Dutcher and her husband Paul of Fort Bragg, CA, Gloria J. Audet and her husband James of North Grosvenordale, and Norma Connors and her husband Thomas of Thompson; her brothers, Philip LaFlamme of Bristol, CT, and Leo LaFlamme of Grosvenordale; her grandchildren, Melissa Ryan, and Michael Audet and his wife Melissa; her great grandchildren, Julia, Justin, Joey, and Olivia; and her former husband, Ernest Busha.  She was predeceased by her sister, Cecile Lamoureux.

The family would like to thank Lori, Marilyn, and Susan from the VNA Hospice, and the staff at Webster Manor Nursing Home for their compassionate care.

Helen M. Marion

Putnam - Helen M. Marion, 96, formerly of Pomfret Street, died Saturday December 12, 2009.  Born in Southington, CT on October 25, 1913, she was the last of nine children of the late Felix and Victoria (Zysk) Maciora. 

Helen lived for most of her life in New Britain, where she worked for Fafner Bearing and Stanley Works.  In the early 1970′s, she moved to Hartford, where she worked for sixteen years for the State of Connecticut Public Works Department in payroll accounting.  Upon her retirement, she moved to Thompson, and later to Putnam, where she became a proud homeowner at the age of 80. 

Helen was a member of the Royal Travelers, Polish American Citizens Club, Hill Senior Center of Hartford, and the Salvation Army.  She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, North Grosvenordale, and formerly belonged to St. Joseph Cathedral in Hartford. 

Helen is survived by her son, George C. Marion of Fulton, TX; her daughter, Dorothy Landini of Old Saybrook, CT; her grandson, George W. Marion and his wife Ellen of Suffield, CT; two great-grandchildren, Haley Marion and Michael Marion, also of Suffield; and several nieces and nephews. 

She was the sister of the late Joseph Maciora, Mary Rakowski, Anna Fell, Stella Kilpatrick, Lillian Ahlquest, Pauline Maciora, and Regina Maciora.  A brother, Stanislaw Maciora, died before Helen was born.

Alice G. Hackenschmidt

Alice G. Hackenschmidt

1922 – 2009 

Woodstock Alice G. Hackenschmidt, 87, of Brickyard Road, died Sunday, November 29, 2009, in the Matulaitis Nursing Home.  She was the loving wife of the late Victor Hackenschmidt.  Born in Stafford Springs, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Genevieve (Bicknell) Goodwin.  Alice worked for Pratt & Whitney aircraft in Hartford during WWII, and was the first woman to work in the engine test house.  She married Victor Hackenschmidt, a Staff Sergeant with the Connecticut National Guard, 169th Infantry, served in the Pacific theatre, including Guadalcanal campaign.  Alice and Victor were married in Ashford, Connecticut, May 26, 1945.  The newlyweds drove across the country to his next duty station at Camp Adair, Oregon, just north of Corvallis.  He was discharged from the U.S. Army October 5, 1945.  Alice and Victor decided to remain in Corvallis to raise their family.  Victor passed away in July 1983, and Alice stayed on until 1996 at which time she moved to Beaverton to live with her son.  In 2006, she moved to Woodstock to live with her sister Beatrice.  She was active in the Evangelical Covenant Church of Woodstock. 

Alice is survived by her son, Victor; her daughters, Carol Drlica of California City, CA, and Heidi Hughes of Park City, UT; her brothers, Robert Goodwin and his wife Marguerite of Woodstock, Conrad Goodwin and his wife Lorraine of North Windham,  and Philip Goodwin of Woodstock; her sisters, Constance Dombroski of Thompson, and Beatrice Bebbington of Woodstock; her grandchildren, Dr. Sara Arnold, Adelle Martin, Angela Hackenschmidt, Holly Shannon, Francie Hackenschmidt, Amy Hackenschmidt, Joe Hackenschmidt, Blake Hughes, Abby Hughes, Taylor Crawford and Marshall Crawford; her great grandchild, Skye Arnold; her 34 nieces and nephews and many grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers, the late Ralph Goodwin, Lawrence Goodwin, and Arthur Goodwin; and her sisters, the late Ruth Dion, Emily Richards, Clara Ellson; and her great grandson Vincent Shields.

Michael J. Mastalerz

Woodstock- Michael J. Mastalerz, 52 of Little Pond Rd. died peacefully at home surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Leanne (Mancini) Mastalerz for nine years. Born in Springfield, MA, he was the son of the late Edwin and Barbara (Sarafino) Mastalerz.

After serving in the Air Force, Michael worked as a correctional officer for the Connecticut Department of Corrections, most recently at Carl Robinson Correctional Institution in Enfield. He retired in 2002. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid football and New York Giants fan.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael Mastalerz and his fiancé Stephanie MacDonald of Franklin, and Andrew Mancini of Woodstock; two daughters, Tina Mastalerz of Lebanon, and Amanda Mancini of Woodstock; and a sister Paula Nichols of Sarasota, FL. He was the brother of the late Gerald Mastalerz.
