Wendell “Windy” McCrillis
1941 – 2009

N. Grosvenordale-Wendell W. “Windy” McCrillis, 68, of Central St., died Saturday, September 19, 2009, in Day Kimball Hospital. He was the loving husband of Minnie (Russell) McCrillis. Born in Fitchburg, MA, he was the son of the late Warren and Flora (Smith) McCrillis.

Mr. McCrillis worked as an auto body technician. He also worked for New England Handle, for the Alaskan Pipeline and on an oilrig in Texas. He was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Besides his wife, Wendell is survived by his sons, James McCrillis of Danielson, William McCrillis of Putnam; his daughter, Lisa Tetreault of Tavares, FL; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, the late Becky McCrillis.

Bernice Laporte

North Grosvenordale, CT – Bernice (Lada) Laporte, 95, formerly of Murolo Road, North Grosvenordale, died on Friday September 18, 2009 in Day Kimball Hospital. She was the loving wife of the late Charles Laporte. Born in North Grosvenordale, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Josephine (Taberski) Lada.

Mrs. Laporte worked as a textile worker for the former Cluett Peabody Manufacturing Co. She enjoyed gardening and caring for her flowers.

Bernice is survived by her daughter, Anne LeBeau and her husband Robert of North Grosvenordale; two Sisters, Johanna Lada of Putnam and Lillian Witkowski of Stafford Springs, CT; three grandchildren, Karen Smat of North Grosvenordale, James LeBeau of Kissimmee, FL and Kerry Akana of North Grosvenordale; and eight great-grandchildren, Ryan Smat, Nicholas Smat, Taylor Smat, Tyler LeBeau, Andrew LaBeau, Makaylee Akana, Kai Akana and Kayd Akana.

Lorena M. Dumas

Smithfield, RI and Grosvenordale, CT – Lorena (Montigny) Dumas, 93, formerly of Grosvenordale, died on September 11, 2009 at North Bay Manor in Smithfield, RI. She was the loving wife of the late Eugene Dumas. Born in Cumberland, RI, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Melina (Piche) Montigny.

Mrs. Dumas owned and operated Dumas’ Decorating in Grosvenordale, CT, beginning the business in 1950 with 1 wallpaper book and 100 gallons of paint. She retired from Dumas’ in 1978, and spent many happy years traveling the country with friends.

Mrs. Dumas enjoyed reading, knitting, and Friday afternoon lunches with her friends. During her eighties she spent time helping “the old people in the neighborhood!” Lorena was devoted to her family above all else.

Lorena is survived by her son, Eugene Dumas of Thompson; her daughters, Mary Fazio of Bridgewater MA, and The Reverend Louise Dumas of Granby MA; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 2 great great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Joan Christensen, who died in 1999.

Thompson, CT – Mary M. (Moitozo) Dubeau, 96, wife of the late Liguori Dubeau, formerly of Riverside Drive, died Sunday, September 7, 2009, in Putnam. Born in West Warwick, RI, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Mary (Simas) Moitozo.

Mary was a retired inspector, having worked many years at Bates Shoe in North Grosvenordale. She was a parishioner of Saint Joseph Church in North Grosvenordale, was a member of the Thompson Senior Citizens, and loved playing bingo.

She leaves two sisters, Virginia Leo of North Grosvenordale and Jean Perrotta of Tucson, AZ; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Robert Dubeau and her three brothers, Joseph Moitozo, Anthony Moitozo, and John Moitozo.

Killingly, CT – Victoria (Carroll) Cicillini, 83, formerly of Fall Brook Park, died Friday, September 4, 2009 in Webster, MA.

Victoria was born in Cumberland, RI, daughter of the late William & Sophie (Lesinski) Carroll. She was a retired cosmetologist.

She leaves her children, Carla Savoie, Pamela Tubbs, Barry Fernandez, Alan Fernandez; and five grandchildren.

Private graveside services will be held on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 in Elmvale Cemetery, Woodstock. Calling hours were respectfully omitted. Gilman Funeral Home, has been entrusted with arrangements.

Leona (LaVigne) Cotnoir

Leona (LaVigne) Cotnoir
1928 – 2009

Putnam – Leona J. Cotnoir, 80, of Van Den Noort Street, died Monday, September 7, 2009, in Day Kimball Hospital. She was the loving wife of Gerard Cotnoir for 58 years. They were married in St. Mary Church of the Visitation on January 31, 1951. Born in Putnam, she was the daughter of the late Ernest and Juliette (Benoit) LaVigne.

Mrs. Cotnoir worked as a Pharmacist for Pevners Pharmacy, Allard Pharmacy, and retired from CVS Pharmacy. She was a 1950 graduate of the University of Connecticut School of Pharmacy. She was one of the first female pharmacists in North East Connecticut. She was a member of the UCONN Alumni Association and was a communicant of Saint Mary Church of the Visitation. She enjoyed knitting and was an avid Red Sox fan.

Besides her husband, Leona is survived by her sons, Gerard Cotnoir of Putnam, Marc Cotnoir of Woodstock, and Ernest Cotnoir of Putnam; her daughter, Michelle Cotnoir of Concord, NH; her grandchildren, Joshua Roos, Gerard Samson, Carly Cotnoir, Emma Cotnoir, and Nicole Cotnoir; her great-grandchildren, Zachary Roos and Haley Fish.

William M. Bertrand

Ware, MA-William M. Bertrand, 56, formerly of Woodstock, died unexpectedly on Sept. 3, 2009.
Bill was born at Fort Devens, MA he was the son of the late Charles H. Bertrand and the late Beryl L. (Prentice) Bertrand. He grew up at Fort Devens and on Okinawa before his father retired from military service in 1966 and settled on Rocky Hill Road in Woodstock. He attended Woodstock Public School and Woodstock Academy, graduating in 1971. Bill was a three-sport athlete at the Academy, playing soccer, basketball, and baseball. He also studied and played basketball at Manchester Community College.
He pursued a variety of occupations during his life, including several years at Glass Container Co. in Dayville. He also worked in fiber optics technology at manufacturers in Connecticut and Massachusetts. He sold new and used cars for several years at two dealerships in Auburn, Mass., and most recently was a sales representative for Century 21 Moulton Real Estate in Ware, Mass.
An accomplished golfer, Bill enjoyed his happiest times with friends on the golf course. He was a member of Dunroamin Country Club in Gilbertville, Mass., and Scottish Meadow Golf Club in Brimfield, Mass. He also followed professional and collegiate sports, most notably University of Connecticut basketball.
Bill, who cared for his mother in her final years before her death in 2003, is survived by three sisters, Karen Leduc of Putnam, and Cheryl Reynolds and Carol Case, both of West Plains, Mo.; a brother, Charles L. Bertrand of Colchester; and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Bill’s family from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Friday, September 11, 2009 in the Gilman Funeral Home, 104 Church St., Putnam. A memorial ceremony will be held on Oct. 25, 2009 at Dunroamin Country Club, which will dedicate its season-ending tournament on that day to Bill’s memory.
